Free FAST-B parenting program returns this fall

Families are invited to participate in a free six-week program designed to provide practical tools for supporting children’s behavior and strengthening family relationships.

Island County Human Services and Island County Public Health are bringing First Approach Skills Training - Behavior (FAST-B) back to Camano Island beginning in October. The program has been offered locally for the past two years, including sessions serving families from Elger Bay and Utsalady elementary schools.

Developed by psychologists at Seattle Children’s Hospital, FAST-B teaches brief, evidence-based strategies for common behavior challenges in children ages 4-11. The program helps caregivers learn ways to encourage positive behaviors, strengthen connections with their children, and respond to challenging behaviors. Previous sessions also gave families opportunities to connect with other caregivers and learn about community resources.

This fall’s program begins Tuesday, Oct. 13, and can accommodate up to 20 families, with priority given to Island County residents. Families will meet weekly during the October-November series.

Dinner and childcare are provided at each session at no cost to families. Families who complete the program will also receive a $50 gift card.

The program is intended to help bridge the gap between schools, primary care providers, and mental health services for children and families in rural communities. Previous FAST-B sessions brought together school staff, local pediatricians, and behavioral health professionals to provide families with support close to home.

Interested families should contact Lauren Solbakken, Camano Island Public Health Nurse, at L.Solbakken@islandcountywa.gov for more information or to sign up.
